Your Daily Contact Lenses Guide

Tips For First Time Contact Lens Wearers

When your doctor writes you a prescription for corrective lenses you may not want to get glasses. People wear contacts for several reasons; they dislike frames, they don’t want anyone to know that they need glasses; they find that contacts are easier to keep up with. Regardless of the reason, if you don’t want glasses you shouldn’t purchase something that you don’t like. Wearing a contact lens is something that will take a little time getting use to but you can do it. At first, a contact lens may cause you to blink a lot as a reflex. Once you get use to them you should not even know that they are in.

Cleaning your contact lens is also very important. If you don’t clean the lens right you may end up with an eye infection or a problem seeing correctly. When using contacts for the first time, you may not realize that there is a process to cleaning them. You first need to wash your hands, including the fingertips and under the nails thoroughly. Pat dry and pick up one lens out of the container. Place the lens in the center of your hand and gently pour the contact cleaner over the lens. Then take the saline solution and gently pour over the lens before inserting it into the eye. Remember that every contact is different and your doctor may want you to use another method to clean the contact lens. Follow the directions completely as to avoid any way of transmitting bacteria or fungi from the lens to the eye.

If you have long fingernails you may accidentally tear one of the contacts and will be unable to use the contact any more. You may need to trim the nails back or handle with extreme care. When you clean the contacts make sure that you hold your hand with the contact over a solid surface in case the contact slips out of your hand so you will be able to find it again. Sometimes when a lens drops it may need to be cleaned again to avoid any contamination to that lens. If your contact lens tears you will need to call your eye doctor to purchase a replacement lens. While you wait on your replacement lens you will want to use glasses or another alternative in order to see clearly while you are waiting on your contacts.
