How To Rehydrate Dry Eyes When Using Contact Lenses

In eyes that are considered to be healthy a small amount of moisture is usually present and prevents irritation especially to those who wear contact lenses. Unfortunately for some the presence of moisture in the eye is insufficent and the condition is further exacerbated by the use of contact lenses and the eye becomes irritated and extremely uncomfortable.

For some the inability to produce necessary moisture or tears can be a major contributory cause of eye dryness, though contact lenses are also known to create this situation. Not everyone is able to produce enough tears to keep the eye hydrated and this situation often deteriorates further with age. For those who wear contact lenses it can be quite distressing.

Apart from the inability to produce tears, external conditions such as the atmosphere which can can affect this condition. For example, a dry, dusty or smokey working environment may affect the eye and cause dehydration. Prolonged periods of exposure to these conditions will result in the eye becoming more dehydrated. This type of situation will make wearing contact lenses untenable and the wearer will remove them to prevent further irritation.

As previously mentioned, contact lenses themselves can cause eyes to become dry, though not all. More than half of the composition of contact lenses are made of water, the rest being polymers. As the lenses contain water it is inevitable that they will become dry and begin to lose moisture and to prevent this from occurring the contact lens relies on the available moisture in the eye to keep them hydrated. This situation in turn causes the eye to lose moisture and become aggravated and red. Over a period of 24 hours this is a logical turn of events.

To overcome this all too common problem the companies who manufacture contact lenses strive to create contact lenses that will not contribute to the dry eye scenario and remain lubricated whilst they are being worn. Changing from contact lenses to glasses is a regular occurence for those who have a dry eye condition..
