What Products You Need To Keep Your Contacts Clean


All contact lenses, regardless of style, type or brand, must undergo a habitual cleaning regime. The conventional time to clean your contact lenses is after you have removed them at night. However, if you have contacts that can be left in whilst you sleep you must remember to remove them and ensure that they are cleaned regularly. The products listed below are recommended for cleaning and storing your contact lenses.

Saline – Saline is the solution that you place your contact lenses in after they have been cleaned at the end of each day. Saline is also used as a rinsing agent for your lenses which should always be done before they are stored for the night. However, do not be tempted to use saline to clean your lenses as it is not designed for this purpose.

Daily cleaner solution – As the name suggests this solution is used primarly to clean your contact lenses. The best way to clean your lenses is to put a little of the solution into the palm of your hands and carefully clean the contact lens by lightly rubbing for about half a minute so that all the both surfaces are completely sanitized. Finally your lenses will require rinsing and disinfecting by other appropriate products.

Multipurpose solution – This solution is highly versatile as it performs all the actions required to clean and store your lenses without resorting to multiple products. For cleaning, rinsing, disinfecting and storing this is the ideal product.

Hydrogen peroxide – This solution is very similar to the multipurpose solution in as far as it can be used to perform all the necessary stages of cleaning and storing that is required on a regular basis. However, when cleaning your contact lenses it is not necessary to rub them but to soak them in this solution for several minutes. The other advantage to hydrogen peroxide is that it contains no chemicals than can cause irritation to your eyes. This product is also used as a rinsing agent and you should use it to rinse your lenses before you wear them.

Cleaning and disinfecting – There are two ways in which contact lenses are cleaned, either by rubbing or through ultrasonic waves. Similarly disinfecting is achieved by ultra violet light or by using a multipurpose solution. Before performing either functions you should ensure that you have read and understood the instructions found on the label and follow them as recommended for the safety of your eyes.

Enzymatic cleaners – These cleaners are in the form of a tablet that should be used in conjunction with saline or disinfecting solution. The objective of enzymatic cleaners is to remove protein accumulation from your contact lenses. Weekly use of this product is recommended.

Protein removers – Contact lenses are susceptible to protein build up which has to be removed. Specific cleaners designed to remove the protein ccumulation are used with multipurpose solution. Protein removers can be used daily and all that is required is the addition of a dew drops of this product to the solution that you use to store your contacts.

Eye drops – To counteract the problems caused by dry eyes or lack of moisture eye drops can be used as a when necessary. Before using eye drops make sure that you buy a brand that will not cause damage to the eye in order to prevent eye irrition or injury.

All conact lens care products are widely available and are not expensive. It is important to stress that you should always be in possession of these cleaning products if you habitually wear contact lenses.
